Abstract

Background: Social anxiety is a psychological condition frequently experienced by adolescents, especially junior high school students, as they experience rapid psychosocial development.

Objective: To identify the level of social anxiety among students at Muhammadiyah Pekajangan Junior High School and to describe the demographic factors associated with it.

Method: A descriptive quantitative design with a survey approach was employed. The population consisted of all 361 students, and data were collected using the culturally adapted Liebowitz Social Anxiety Scale (LSAS). Total sampling was used, and analyses included descriptive statistics to determine the prevalence of social anxiety and inferential tests to explore associations with age, gender, and parenting style.

Results: 45.8% of students experienced mild social anxiety, 20.9% moderate, 10.6% severe, 3.4% severe, and 6.9% extremely severe, while only 24.9% reported no anxiety. Ninth-grade students showed the highest prevalence of moderate to extremely severe symptoms. Demographically, students aged 13–14 are most affected, and parenting styles are associated with outcomes, with democratic parenting showing a protective effect.

Implications: Most students experience varying degrees of social anxiety, with older students being more vulnerable. Collaborative prevention and intervention efforts are crucial to mitigate the progression of social anxiety into more severe disorders.
