Abstract

Background: Continuous pressure on protruding bones can cause circulatory disorders, skin necrosis, and infection. Effleurage massage with VCO has the benefits of providing relaxation and improving circulation. In addition, VCO is a natural moisturizer that is easily absorbed by the skin, safe, effective, and has no side effects.

Research

Purpose: To examine the effect of effleurage massage with VCO in preventing pressure ulcers in the Intensive Care Unit of Private Hospital, Yogyakarta

Methods: Quasi-experimental research design with pre-post test. Samples were selected using purposive sampling, with 42 respondents divided into an intervention group and a control group selected by lottery. The intervention group received effleurage massage with VCO on the back, scapula, sacrum, elbows, and heels every morning after morning care for 4 minutes for 3 consecutive days, while the control group did not receive effleurage massage but received decubitus prevention according to SOP. Statistical analysis was performed using the Wilcoxon Signed-Rank test and the Mann-Whitney U test

Result: By day three, none of the intervention-group respondents developed pressure ulcers, whereas four controls (19%) developed grade I pressure ulcers. The between-group comparison yielded p=0.038.

Implication: VCO effleurage massage may be considered an adjunctive measure for pressure ulcer prevention in ICU patients.
